Bidirectional DC Motor Controllers

KTA-198 Dual Bidirectional DC Motor Speed Controller
This Motor Speed Controller allows a user to control the speed of up to two DC Motors independently, using an analog 0-5V signal, potentiometers, serial port of a PC or 1-2mS RC Pulse.
Modes of Operation:
The KT-5198 can be operated in serial, analog or pulse mode. In analog and pulse modes each motor can be operated in unidirectional mode with the 0-5V analog input (or 1-2mS pulse) giving 0-100% PWM and a digital input for direction selection, or in bidirectional mode where the analog or pulse input is responsible for both direction and speed selection.
In bidirectional mode 2.5V (or 1.5mS pulse) will give 0% PWM duty, increasing voltage from 2.5V to 5V (or pulses from 1.5 to 2mS) will increase the PWM duty from 0-100% and turn the motor in one direction. Decreasing the voltage from 2.5V to 0V (or pulses from 1.5 to 1mS) will increase the PWM duty from 0-100% and turn the motor in the other direction.

The PWM frequency can be set by a serially command to 10KHz, 1.25KHz and 156Hz
The maximum voltage available to run the motor is 50VDC.
Current: The IRFZ44 MOSFET can handle 49A; the IRF4905 can handle 74A. However the PCB tracks that run from the MOSFET pins to the screw terminal block can only handle around 10A. When running the motor check the temperature of the MOSFETs to see if heatsinks are required.

KIT-166 and KTA-166 Bidirectional DC Motor Controller
This kit allows controls the speed of a DC motor in both the forward and reverse direction using pulse width modulation PWM. The range of control is from fully OFF to fully ON in both directions.
Also, it is not a good idea to suddenly reverse the voltage on a DC motor while it is spinning. It can cause a current surge that can burn out the speed controller. Not to mention any mechanical stress it can cause as well.

This kit overcomes both these problems. The direction and
speed is controlled using a single potentiometer. Turning
the pot in one direction causes the motor to start spinning.
Turning the pot in the other direction causes the motor to
spin in the opposite direction. The center position on the
pot is OFF, forcing the motor to slow and stop before
changing direction.

The maximum voltage available to run the motor is 32VDC.
Current: The IRFZ44 MOSFET can handle 49A; the IRF4905 can handle 74A. However the PCB tracks that run from the MOSFET pins to the screw terminal block can only handle around 5A. This can be increased by soldering wire links across the PCB tracks. If you do then check that the MOSFETs don’t get too hot – if so then bigger heatsinks will be required.
